Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system

Also: Fight-or-flight and rest-and-digest

The two main branches of the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic branch generally raises arousal and readiness for action; the parasympathetic branch is associated with rest and recovery. The popular fight-or-flight versus rest-and-digest picture is a simplification, as both branches work together continuously.
