Paradoxical breathing
Also known as: Reverse breathing
German: Paradoxe Atmung, Umgekehrte Atmung
A breathing pattern in which chest and belly move opposite to the expected direction, for example the belly pulling in as air comes in. A deliberate version is sometimes taught in martial arts and some yoga traditions. Unintended paradoxical breathing that is persistent or comes with breathlessness should be assessed by a doctor.
