Neuroception
German: Neurozeption
A term by Stephen Porges for the nervous system's automatic, below-awareness detection of cues of safety or threat. It is part of polyvagal theory, whose physiological assumptions are debated in the scientific literature, so it is best understood as a useful metaphor rather than a measured mechanism.
